Take a walk on the Creative Side
Creating cutesy characters
Mayhem pumped out an amazing number of assets over our 15 hours we created the game in. Below are the initial sketches of the characters with their animation frames. After seeing these images we knew the game was going to be super cute. The idle animation was kept super simple with a simple bob. It was important that we made the characters super expressive to help create characters that are loveable. The story of the game is a Secret shhh... for now. But, you'll have to wait till we release our next update. We are working on the cutscenes while we write this Devlog. We are going to add more frames of animation to make the game feel smoother and fix a few of the animation issues people have made us aware of.
Looking cute in black and white is good and all, but colour really makes these two cuties shine. Mayhem did a great job with the colour palette for these sprites with the muted pastel colours. My (Brodie's) favourite by far is Lumina's first jump frame. The look of determination looks super cute especially with the prance like jump.
Sound inbound
After seeing what artwork was made Thebrodester had a lot of catching up to do with the music. Brodie took heavy inspiration from the music of Isamu Ohira, most notably 'Be At Home' from the 'Gran Tourismo 4' soundtrack. When brainstorming ideas for the music Brodie stumbled upon a beautiful chord progression. The guitar chord progression is tabbed out below and was designed to be super simple and have a strong beat to it using percussive palm mutes.
Next comes the star of the show, the Ukulele. The Ukulele really gives the theme that upbeat vibe and makes it feel super bright. The part is simple enough to play but creates the desired effect. This effect is also enhanced by the solo sounding easy... because it is. Here's the Ukulele tab. The Ukulele was a concert ukulele in standard tuning all played on the E string.
Both the Ukulele tabs and Guitar tabs are super easy to learn (and will soon be available on Ultimate Guitar). We would love to see some of you wonderful people learn the theme song of the game. Please post links to them in the comments if you put them on YouTube or Vimeo, because we would love to see them.
Thank you guys for the super positive reception of out game and we hope to push this game as far as we can to make a great co-op experience.
Thank you all,
Brodie and Lottie from Never Met Studios
